Saturday Morning at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church
This past Saturday morning I had the sweet privilege of photographing little Mireille’s baptism with the Assaf family at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Pensacola. The church itself—quiet and dignified on West Garden Street—felt like the perfect gentle stage for such an intimate ceremony.
There’s something about Orthodox liturgy that slows time down: the soft hum of the chants, the scent of incense, the way light hits the gilded icons and makes everything glow. Father John led the service with warmth, and his son’s voice rose beside his in a way that made the whole room feel like family—hands held a little tighter, eyes a little wetter. Those moments were some of my favorites to witness and to capture.
Mireille was an absolute dream—curious, calm, and somehow perfectly present through every blessing. The Assaf family gathered around her with that kind of quiet, proud joy that photographers love: real faces, real tears, and a lot of tender laughter right after the formal parts. I moved around carefully, letting the ceremony breathe while looking for the small, human moments that tell the rest of the story.
The church’s interior—its arches, icons, and warm, reflective light—gave the images a timeless feel; I found myself drawn to the same little pockets of light and shadow again and again.
Leaving, I felt grateful. There’s nothing quite like being invited into a family’s most meaningful rituals, and this morning was one of those rare gifts: solemn, beautiful, and full of love. To the Assaf family—thank you for letting me be there to document Mireille’s day. I’ll be smiling at these photos for a long time.
