A Louisiana Senior with a Lifetime of Memories
Emma's Senior Session at Pensacola Beach
Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Emma O'Connell, a senior from Louisiana whose family has vacationed in Pensacola Beach every year since she was a little girl. Those annual trips created so many wonderful memories that when it came time for her senior portraits, there was no question where she wanted them taken.
Emma's mom, Denise, contacted me on the Fourth of July to book the session. As we talked about Emma's vision, it became clear that my Full Senior Package was exactly what they were looking for. Emma wanted a variety of locations, multiple outfit changes, and plenty of time to create something truly special.
When they arrived, I knew it was going to be a fun morning. Denise brought along her best friend, the rest of the family, and Emma's boyfriend, who all cheered her on throughout the session. Emma also brought her graduation cap and gown, which made for some classic senior portraits to celebrate this exciting milestone.
Before the session, I shared several location ideas and showed them examples from my senior portfolio. Together, we decided that the east side of Pensacola Beach would be the perfect setting. Since their family has stayed at Portofino Island Resort for years, the location held a special place in their hearts.
We met at 7:45 in the morning. I know an early start isn't every senior's favorite idea, but trust me—it was the right decision. Florida is currently under an extreme heat watch, and even early in the day, the heat was intense.
At one point, I actually stopped the session and insisted everyone take a break in the air-conditioned cars. The next part of our shoot required a fairly long walk through the white sand, and anyone who has done that in the Florida summer knows just how exhausting it can be. Safety always comes first, and I wanted everyone to enjoy the experience.
The break was worth it.
Everything came together perfectly. The sky was one of the deepest, most vibrant blues I've seen in a long time. The white sand looked absolutely stunning against the clear morning sky, creating the perfect backdrop for Emma's portraits.
I was also thrilled to discover that the beach swing was still standing and that one of my favorite little "secret" senior locations still had beautiful shade waiting for us. It was the perfect finishing touch, and both Emma and her family absolutely loved it.
By the end of our hour-and-a-half session, I was definitely feeling the effects of the heat. I actually told everyone goodbye and let them make the walk back to the parking area while I stayed behind to sit in the shade for a few minutes and cool off. At that moment, I made a promise to myself—I wasn't planning on spending much time outdoors for the next few days! 😂
Every now and then, a session comes together exactly the way you envisioned it. Beautiful light. Gorgeous scenery. An amazing senior. A wonderful family.
This was one of those sessions.
The images are absolutely stunning, and I honestly couldn't wait to edit a few and share a sneak peek. Emma, thank you for trusting me with such an important milestone. It was an honor to help preserve not only your senior year, but also your family's lifelong connection to Pensacola Beach.
Congratulations, Emma! I can't wait to share the rest of your gallery.
