A Cloudy Morning, a Windy Beach & a Family Full of Personality
Not every beach session comes with blue skies, crystal-clear water, and perfectly calm waves.
Sometimes, you get a cloudy morning after a week of rain, rough water, and enough wind to make everyone wonder if their hair is ever going to cooperate.
And sometimes, you get some pretty amazing photographs anyway.
That was exactly what happened when I met Whitney and her family at Navarre Beach.
Whitney and her husband were taking his four children on vacation, and she desperately wanted to capture this time together. As a stepmother, she understands how important these moments are. Blended families have their own unique challenges, and finding a way to preserve these memories — all of them together — was incredibly important to her.
So we picked a morning and headed to the beach.
There was just one problem.
The kids were tired, or maybe I should just say "being kids"!
We had scheduled an early morning session, and these four were doing their very best to convince me that their eyes simply were not meant to be open at that hour. I can't blame them. After all, they were on vacation!
But between trying to keep everyone's eyes open and fighting the wind, I had my work cut out for me.
And the beach wasn't exactly cooperating either.
After a full week of rain, the Gulf was rough and the water was far from its usual crystal-clear Navarre Beach blue. The sky was heavily overcast, and the wind seemed determined to make sure nobody's hair stayed where it was supposed to.
But here's the thing about family photography:
You don't need perfect weather to make beautiful memories.
We took what the morning gave us.
And slowly, the kids started waking up.
The sleepy expressions began to disappear. They started laughing, playing, and interacting with each other. The session became less about getting everyone to look at the camera and more about letting them simply be themselves.
And that's when the magic happened.
You can actually see it happening in the photographs.
The smiles became genuine. The personalities started coming through. The kids relaxed, and suddenly the wind wasn't quite so important anymore.
In fact, I think the imperfect conditions gave the photographs a little something extra. The cloudy sky created beautiful, soft light, and the movement of the wind and waves helped tell the story of that morning.
It wasn't the postcard version of Navarre Beach.
It was their Navarre Beach.
A little cloudy. A little windy. A little chaotic.
And completely real.
Whitney wanted to memorialize this vacation and this special time with her family, and I think she got exactly what she was hoping for — photographs that capture not only what they looked like, but what this moment in their lives felt like.
Because someday, these kids won't remember whether the water was crystal clear or whether the sky was blue.
They'll remember being together.
And Whitney will have these photographs to remind her of it all.
That's why I love what I do.
Sometimes the best photographs aren't created on the perfect day.
They're created when you take the day you've been given, embrace the chaos, laugh a little, and make the most of it.
And this family did exactly that.
