A Surprise Wedding Session at Fort Pickens
Some photography sessions take me by surprise in the most wonderful way—and this was one of them.
A few weeks ago, Malcolm reached out to me with the sweetest request. He wanted to gift his girlfriend a photo session. In his message, he described their love story with such tenderness that I could almost feel the affection in every word. He told me they had met at a swimming pool, where he taught her how to swim. He spoke about her in a way that was both romantic and genuine, and I knew this wasn’t going to be just any ordinary session. He mentioned that they both loved ballroom dancing, and I could tell he wanted to give her something truly special.
Then silence. Three weeks passed before I heard from him again—this time with a booking at Fort Pickens.
For those who may not know, Fort Pickens is a historical gem at the very edge of Pensacola Beach. With its old Spanish architecture, brick walls, hidden tunnels, and sweeping arches, it’s a photographer’s dream location. It’s often chosen for engagements or wedding portraits, which made me wonder: was Malcolm planning to propose? Were they already engaged?
When they arrived, my heart skipped a beat. Malcolm stepped out in a navy blue suit with a flower tucked neatly into his lapel, and beside him, his bride-to-be wore a creamy white gown that shimmered in the soft light. From the moment I saw them, I knew this was going to be special. There’s something magical about clients who go all out—dressing to the nines transforms a simple session into a dreamy, storybook moment.
As we chatted, curiosity got the best of me, and I asked the question lingering in my mind: “So, when’s the wedding?” Malcolm smiled and, with the calmest voice, said, “We just did—an hour ago.”
I was speechless. In that instant, the entire session shifted. My excitement soared, mixed with a little frantic energy—if only I had known beforehand! But more than anything, I felt humbled. Out of all the photographers he could have chosen, Malcolm had trusted me to capture their very first portraits as husband and wife.
The newlyweds didn’t want to linger too long. They asked for just a handful of images to mark this milestone. Thankfully, I had scouted the fort earlier in the day, so I knew exactly where to take them. The session began with a burst of sunshine, though clouds soon rolled in. Yet no amount of overcast skies could dim the glow between them—their joy radiated in every look, every smile.
As quickly as it began, our session came to an end. I would have happily photographed them for hours, but after such an emotional day, they were ready to wrap up and simply enjoy the moment together.
Driving home, I couldn’t stop smiling. This was more than just a session; it was a love story unfolding before my camera. Malcolm and his bride gave me the honor of documenting their first hour of marriage, and I’ll never forget it.
To Malcolm and Bok—may your lives together be as timeless and full of wonder as the walls of Fort Pickens.
