A California Visit — When the Subject Finally Steps In Front of the Lens

Two weeks in California with my family felt like a long, overdue exhale. I drove into that visit with the sole intention of slowing down: to sit with my parents, laugh with my sister in Sacramento, eat too many good meals, and — if the stars aligned — finally get some new photos of myself.

For years I’ve been the one behind the camera, the quiet conductor of light and direction, the person who helps others feel seen. My website photos were more than four years old; they felt like an old outfit I still loved but hadn’t worn in too long. This trip gave me the chance to finally rebrand myself — to let my sister take the reins and capture me in a way I rarely allow.

She couldn’t wait to try my 85mm lens. I understand the excitement — it’s one of those lenses that does something small and secret to the light, the kind of glass that flatters and reveals at the same time. I’ve owned it for a while and treasure it; handing it to someone else felt oddly intimate. We traded tools that day: her camera in my hands became a prop, and my camera in hers became a gift of trust.

We kept things simple and intentional. Time with family is always precious, and errands and visits fill the hours faster than you expect. Instead of trying to race around thirty locations, we chose one place — the front of her home — and treated it like a studio. The familiar backdrop gave me space to relax. My sister photographed me as if she was photographing the me she knows in ordinary moments: laughing over coffee, stepping into sunlight, adjusting a jacket — honest gestures, not posed performances.

Working together felt like therapy and celebration wrapped into one. I showed her a few of my techniques, she showed me how it felt to be the subject, and in between frames we ate, talked, and lived the small, luminous moments that make family visits unforgettable. The 85mm did what I hoped: it softened the edges, sharpened the expression, and somehow made those candid seconds feel cinematic.

When I looked through the final images, I felt a mixture of surprise and relief. They were exactly what I needed — authentic, polished, and full of the quiet warmth that comes from being photographed by someone who knows you. I couldn’t be happier with how they turned out.

This trip reminded me why I prioritize both family and craft. Photography is my profession, but it is also a language I share with the people I love. Giving and receiving — whether it’s a lens or a laugh — made these images more than new headshots. They became a small family story, a refreshed version of me I’m proud to share on my site.

If you’re always the one behind the lens, consider letting someone you trust take a turn. The perspective you get back might be the best kind of portrait: one made with love.
