The Three Musketeers | A Beautiful Family Session at Navarre Beach
Some family sessions just have a special kind of magic, and this one certainly did.
When I met the Blackburn family at 8:00 a.m. on Navarre Beach, I quickly realized this wasn't going to be a typical photography session. I affectionately dubbed them "The Three Musketeers." It was just the three of them—Penny, Derek, and Jessica—but they brought enough laughter, love, and personality to fill the entire beach.
Penny and Derek live here along the Gulf Coast, while Jessica lives much farther away. Like so many families separated by distance, they wanted to celebrate the rare opportunity of being together with a family photography session. I always think those are some of the most meaningful portraits because they preserve moments that simply can't be recreated on demand.
I have to admit, smaller family sessions are sometimes a little intimidating for me. I'm so accustomed to photographing groups of ten or twelve people that my challenge usually becomes creating enough variety in posing while making full use of the hour they've booked.
Not this time.
These three made my job unbelievably easy.
From the moment we started, they were smiling, laughing, teasing one another, and reminiscing about old memories. There wasn't a single forced smile all morning. Every laugh was genuine, every conversation sparked another candid moment, and before I knew it, I had taken far more photographs than I had planned. As a photographer, that's always a wonderful problem to have.
Watching them interact reminded me why I love photographing families. The best images rarely come from perfect poses alone—they come from authentic relationships. The Blackburn family didn't have to pretend to enjoy being together. They simply did.
As if that weren't enough, Mother Nature gave us the perfect backdrop. The morning sky was a brilliant blue, the beach was wonderfully quiet, and the Gulf showed off its incredible turquoise water that makes Navarre Beach one of Florida's hidden treasures. With soft morning light and almost no crowds, every scene felt peaceful and timeless.
Sessions like this are a wonderful reminder that family portraits aren't about the number of people in the photograph. They're about celebrating the people who matter most. Whether your family has three members or thirty, every season of life deserves to be remembered.
